This round-table intends to expand the discussion around ‘Jazz in Brazil’ by sharing ongoing research focusing on diverse chronological periods and geographical regions. Pedro Cravinho will be chairing the session, addressing the significant contribution of the Brazilian Jazz Studies Group GEJAZZBR. Marília Giller will present a brief critical analysis of the circulation of the word jazz within the Brazilian press during the 1920s and its contribution to constructing an imaginary of jazz in Paraná. Nicolau Clarindo examines the emergence of the first jazz-bands in three southern states: Paraná, Santa Catarina, and the Rio Grande do Sul during the same period. Thiago Santiago investigates the presence of jazz in Belém do Pará between 1922 and 1940. Antonio Carlos Araújo will examine the emergence of jazz in the State of Maranhão between 1924 and 1965. Laurisabel Silva will discuss how the musical practices associated with the jazes in Salvador, Bahia, during the 1950s, raising questions around gender and feminist studies. Renan Ruiz will analyse the substantial changes in the notion of Brazilian jazz during the 1970s and 1980s.
